Michigan?s New Minimum Wage.

March 26th, 2006 Posted by John

I thought I would drop a short entry today about breaking human resource news in Michigan. Today, Jennifer M. Granhom, Governor of Michigan, signed legislation that will give thousands of workers a pay raise, beginning in October of this year.

Michigan has not increased it’s minimum wage since 1997. Until 1998 Michigan’s minimum wage was only $3.35 per hour. It was then raised to federal standards, based on the federal increase to $5.15 per hour, which is where Michigan’s minimum wage is at currently.

Michigan’s minimum wage rate is currently required for all employer’s who employ two or more employee’s.

All of this started when thousands of workers petitioned the state government with their signatures, providing the states legislature with enough reason to proceed with the bill. This is all coming about with Michigan’s proposed senate bill 318. The bill is sponsored by Senator Ray Basham, in cooperation with the state legislature and Governor Granhom.

The new minimum wage will be raised to $7.40 an hour over the next two years, starting this October 1st to an increase to $6.95. On July 1st, 2006 it will then increase to $7.15 per hour. Finally, it will rise to it’s new rate of $7.40 an hour, on July. 1st, 2008.

The Michigan Complete Labor Law poster currently reflects the minimum wage that will go into effect in October.
