Georgia Department of Labor
August 7th, 2006 Posted by HeatherOne of the many services that the Georgia Department of Labor makes available to the states’ residents is to provide resources for job seekers with disabilities. I learned about Georgia’s Vocational Rehabilitation Program (VR) which provides a variety of services to persons with disabilities as they prepare to find gainful employment. There are 53 offices throughout the state of Georgia that have VR professionals who are able to assist people with disabilities to find work, by providing them help with applying for jobs, determining eligibility, assessing their skills, and job placement.
It is important to remember that certain eligibility requirements must be met to qualify for the Vocational Rehabilitation. These requirements are: the individual must be a citizen of the state of Georgia; the individual must have a permanent physical or mental impairment which interferes with the ability to work; vocational rehabilitation services are necessary for the individual to prepare for, enter, engage in, or keep in gainful (paid) employment; and the individual with the disability can, will, and wants to go to work.
The services that the Vocational Rehabilitation Program provides help people with disabilities prepare for meaningful work. These services are arranged for and provided based on the individual’s needs. As a result, the length of time that it takes to prepare the disabled individual is different for each person, as are the services that are provided to them by VR.
VR clients benefit from the expertise of the staff, or the service delivery team members, which are located in each local office. The service delivery team members help individuals with job applications, eligibility determination through personal assessment, work plan developments, and of course, job placement. The team members are made up of a vocational rehabilitation counselor, account representative, work preparation technician, assistive work technology staff, program assistant, and employment manager. All of the team members work together on the local level and utilize their knowledge of both the employment community and the services available to the job seeker to assist the disabled find jobs.
