Colorado Labor Laws

The state of Colorado has a number of labor laws covering issues in which employers and employees alike may be interested in. The topics covered by Colorado law include payment of wages, the minimum wage, working conditions, employment of minors, and union issues and grievances. Here’s an overview of some important points:

Payment of Wages: Colorado’s wage payment law requires workers to be paid at least monthly. This law also sets out regulations related to employer record keeping, payroll deductions, and employee payment in strike situations and in employee termination situations,

Minimum Wage: While Colorado’s minimum wage is currently set as the same as the federal minimum wage of $5.15 an hour, the minimum wage law also contains some interesting provisions.

Overtime, Meals and Breaks: The Minimum Wage Order Number 22 gives rules for overtime, meal breaks and rest periods. In Colorado, employees not exempt from minimum wage must be paid overtime for all hours in excess of 40 in a week and any hours in excess of 12 in a given day. Colorado employers are also required to give most employees (other than those of an administrative, executive or professional nature) a 30 minute meal break for each five hours of work, and a 10 minute rest period for each four hours continuously worked.

Employment of Minors: Colorado law sets out a variety of provisions regulating the occupations available at various ages, as well as the age certifications and record keeping that employers need in order to hire minors.

Working Conditions: Like many other states, Colorado provides regulations governing work conditions in a variety of potentially unsafe environments.

Union Issues and Grievances: The state law covers a number of Union issues including fair and unfair labor practices, arbitration, mediation, and the rights of employees to unionize.

The Colorado Complete Labor Law poster contains more information on these and many other labor laws at both the Federal and state level.
