Oklahoma Department of Labor

The Oklahoma Constitution created the Oklahoma Department of Labor in 1907. Since its inception, the department has managed to continuously function under many different commissioners and governors. The Commissioner is named every four years and is responsible for the enforcement of the labor laws that promote the integrity and fairness of the workforce. These laws include state OSHA laws, asbestos compliance, wage and child labor laws, and workers’ compensation compliance. The department is divided into units that either support the other divisions or offer services directly to the public.

The Workers Compensation Enforcement Unit ensures that all employers comply with the workers compensation act and provide appropriate coverage. The labor compliance officers provide employers with copies of the act and make sure that they comply and they are responsible for citing employers who do not.

The Safety Standards Division has inspectors around the state. They regulate welding practices, and the installation, maintenance and operations of hot water heaters, pressure vessels, boilers and amusement rides.

The Safety Pays Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) Consultation Division provides free consultations to private sector employers on health and safety standards. This is a voluntary service and must be requested by an employer. The Public Employee Occupational Safety & Health (PEOSH) Unit provides enforcement and consultation to public sector employers to protect public employees from workplace accidents and injuries.

The Child Labor Unit is responsible for enforcing the states child labor laws, making sure that minors are not employed in hazardous work environments and that they are receiving fair wages and hours.

The Wage and Hour Unit is responsible for processing all wage claims under the departments authority

The Licensing Unit handles licensing for private employment agencies for persons who conduct activities relating to asbestos, and most welders, weld test facilities and weld inspectors.

The Asbestos Division makes sure that asbestos abatement projects are completed safely and while in compliance with the law.

The Statistical Research Analysis Unit is responsible for conducting occupational safety and health surveys in conjunction with the USDOL Bureau of Labor Statistics. Research and incident information is provided to assist officials with safety programs.
