Arkansas Child Labor Law Posters
August 18th, 2006 Posted by JaredIn the state of Arkansas, I found that there are many child labor laws in effect. It is required that employers in Arkansas make available the Arkansas Child Labor Law Posters to their employees as an overview for these laws. In most cases, these and many other legal posters are hung in the break rooms of the business.
Some of the most common questions about Arkansas’s child labor laws are: “What age can a child start working?”, “How many hours can a minor work?”, “What hours can a minor work?” and “What jobs are minors allowed to hold?”. In my research, I found the answers to these questions and will take a moment and answer all of these questions for you.
To start, I found that a minor can generally begin working at the age of 14. At the age of 16 and 17, minors are eligible to work almost any job, with a few exceptions. I found that in Arkansas, as with many other states, minors are not permitted to work in positions considered to be “hazardous”.
The working hours of a minor in Arkansas are limited mostly through the school year. However, I found a minor in the state can work up to 48 hours during a week, even when school is in session. A 14 or 15 year old can work between the hours of 6 AM and 7 PM, work up to 8 hours per day, work up to 6 days per week, and up to 48 hours during that week, even when school is in session. Outside of the school year, a minor 14 or 15 can work until 9 PM instead of 7 PM, but the other maximum limits stay the same.
Minors 16 and 17 can work even more, even during the school year. I found that the child labor laws of Arkansas state that any minor of these ages can work between 6 AM and 11 PM, work up to 10 hours per day, work up to 6 days per week, and up to 54 hours during that week. Outside of the school year, the laws for 16 and 17 year olds are identical with the exception that there is no limit on how late they can work.
This blog entry only covers the most basic of the child labor laws which are found in Arkansas. You can find more detailed information about the Arkansas child labor laws on the Arkansas Child Labor Law Posters, or the Arkansas Complete Labor Law Poster.
