Connecticut Child Labor Law Posters

There are several Connecticut Child Labor Law Posters that need to be posted in various places of business. There is one that needs to be displayed in mercantile/retail trades and one that needs to be displayed in restaurants/food service businesses. The Connecticut Child Labor Law Posters are required to be displayed in a place of prominence in any business where minors are employed.

One thing I found interesting about the Connecticut Child Labor Law Posters is that it spells out clearly that anyone under the age of 16 cannot work in any food service positions. They may hold various jobs in retail businesses, but restaurants of any sort are completely off limits.

I noticed that the hours a minor can work are comparable to other state child labor laws. During school weeks, 16 and 17 year olds employed in retail can work 6 AM to 10 PM, or 11 PM if there is not school the next day. They can work 6 hours per day (8 hours on non-school days and days not preceding a school day) for up to 32 hours per week (48 hours on non-school weeks). Hours for minors employed in food service is slightly different. For minors who are 15, the rules are much stricter. They can only work during non-school weeks except in retail food stores, where they are only permitted to work on Saturdays.

In retail, minors are required to get minimum wage, which is currently $7.40 per hour. A raise in the minimum wage occurs in January of 2007, at which time it will be $7.65 per hours. In food service, most minors get minimum wage, unless they work as wait staff. If that is the case, I found they can be paid $5.23 per hour, plus gratuities.

I suggest you look at the Connecticut Child Labor Law Posters for more detailed information about these important laws. You can also find all of these posters combined onto the Connecticut Complete Labor Law Poster.
