RI Posters

Rhode Island posters that outline the state and federal labor and employment laws must be posted in the states’ workplaces. This posting of information is the employers’ responsibility. The employer needs to make sure the posters are in a visible spot within an area that all employees have access. Anywhere employees tend to gather or visit on a regular basis would be appropriate – possible locations would be the employee workroom, break room or mail room. Employers also need to make sure that the information that they have posted is current because labor laws tend to change frequently, even yearly (for example, the No Smoking Notice is a new law).

The Rhode Island posters need to have both state and federal laws on them. The required state laws include the No Smoking Notice, the Family/Medical Leave Act and information on minimum wage, the Right-to-Know, discrimination, unemployment insurance, sexual harassment and workers’ compensation. The federal posting requirements are virtually the same for all states. They include the following laws: USERRA – Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, Equal Employment Opportunity is the Law, Federal Minimum Wage, Employee Polygraph Protection Act, Family and Medical Leave Act and OSHA – Job Safety and Health Protection.

The posting requirements for the Rhode Island posters are primarily meant to benefit the states’ employees. The posters give them the information they need to know and understand their rights and responsibilities as outline by the labor and employment laws applicable to their jobs. The laws also give information on the complaint process as well as which state and federal agencies they need to contact if there is a problem.

Employers also benefit from this information, however, because they can use the information on the posters to help them know exactly what is expected of them when it comes to upholding their employees’ rights. They can also use the Rhode Island posters on the occasion that they have a question about a certain law such as what they need to do to make sure they are complying to the new No Smoking Notice.
