VI Laws
September 20th, 2006 Posted by HeatherVI laws include provisions for regulation of employment issues. These laws help employers and employees know their rights and responsibilities within the workplace.
One issue that is covered within Virgin Islands laws includes that of unemployment insurance regulation. The reason why unemployment insurance is offered on the Virgin Islands is to help offset the loss of wages that could affect an unemployed workers’ economy, as well as the general economy of this area.
Another provision of VI laws is for that of workers’ compensation. Workers’ compensation benefits are given to injured people, and those with diseases that are employment-related. Costs for such things as medical treatment are paid for by workers’ comp benefits until the affected employee is able to return to work.
Employees who forfeit the right to sue an employer for job-related injuries, and all employers throughout the Virgin Islands are required to carry workers’ comp coverage. Usually this benefit is paid at no more than 66 percent and no less than 60 dollars a week. Certain restrictions apply to this in some cases.
Other VI laws indicate various health and safety procedures. These procedures are enforced by the Virgin Islands OSHA division. One section of these safety laws indicates the procedures that need to take place in the case of preparing and responding to an onsite emergency. These guidelines are enforced mainly by way of training and education.
VI laws pertaining to safety also help employers and employees know what precautions to take with chemicals, bio waste, and more. Many of these regulations are modeled after the ones created by the U.S. federal government.
VI laws that pertain to employment within the state of Virgin Islands help employees and employers to know whether they are abiding by the right standards. These standards are changed from time to time to help improve current working conditions.
