VT Laws
September 20th, 2006 Posted by HeatherVT laws regarding employment help establish a standard for the workplace. All employers and employees are advised to know their rights and responsibilities written within these laws.
VT laws include provisions for that of workers’ compensation. These benefits are paid out to employees regardless of cause of the injury. Workers’ compensation covers sudden accidents, as well as injuries formed gradually due to stress and other factors. These benefits help pay for medical costs, temporary disability and/or death benefits to dependants.
VT laws also establish the procedure for obtaining unemployment benefits in the state of Vermont. Those who are eligible for unemployment compensation must be actively searching for work while claiming benefits. In addition, they shall be required to document their work search efforts. There is usually a 10-day waiting period before benefit payments begin.
Other VT laws pertain to the payment of wages. For instance all employees shall be paid on a regularly scheduled payday according to the frequency required by law. Some employees are paid weekly, while others are paid bi-weekly, or semi-monthly. These wages must be paid by lawful money or checks.
VT laws also make provisions for safety in the workplace. In fact, a free consultation program is set in place for employers who have 250 or less people on staff in a location or 500 people or less working corporate wide.
Employer consultation services include a free inspection, which will help small employers fix any problems before OSHA would need to be notified. These inspections also minimize injuries in the workplace, and the cost of treating them.
The above VT laws are only some of the provisions made regarding employment. Other state and federal guidelines exist as well that the state of Vermont follows. These laws help both employers and employees know what to expect and they also explain various procedures.
