Utah (UT) Job Discrimination Law in the Workplace

If you work in Utah it is good to know that you are protected from harassment and discrimination in the workforce. There are federal statutes and state laws that prohibit this type of activity regarding employment. Utah has a special division to handle such matters. The Division also conducts public awareness and educational presentations in an effort to end discrimination.

The Anti-discrimination and Labor Division investigates and resolves complaints about Utah (UT) Job Discrimination Law in the Workplace. The law prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, and disability. Utah’s law also prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or pregnancy related conditions. It is considered unlawful employment practice for any employer to refuse to hire, promote, discharge, demote, terminate, or to retaliate against; or to discriminate in matters of compensation; or in terms, privileges, and conditions of employment on these bases.

The Division has a work share agreement with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to act as an agent and has authority to take action for not only Utah (UT) Job Discrimination Law in the Workplace but the federal Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act as well. The Division receives, mediates, investigates, and resolves charges of employment discrimination. They also acts as a resource to employees and employers concerning laws which prohibit employment discrimination, conducts seminars, and utilizes other teaching methods to make employers aware of conditions which lead to employment discrimination.

If you feel you have been discriminated against or if you have questions regarding your rights under the law you would contact the Division for assistance. Utah (UT) Job Discrimination Law in the Workplace also protects you from being discriminated against for filing a complaint or offering assistance to the Division in the investigation of a complaint.
