VI Labor Laws

The Virgin Islands (VI) labor laws follow along with the federal labor laws for the United States. They can be found online, just as a state’s labor laws would. These VI labor laws deal with things like workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance, and many more.

In many instances, these laws need to be hung around the work place for employees to see. Most can be found on some sort of Virgin Islands labor law poster. Employers take these posters and hang them in conspicuous places around the business. Some common places to find these publications are the employee break room, work area and the walls around the time clock.

The first VI labor law is about unemployment insurance. The Virgin Islands think that no income during times of unemployment will cause damage to their workers morally and health-wise. Unemployment insurance covers the briefly unemployed worker’s expenses until suitable work can be attained.

VI labor laws also allow for workers’ compensation. When a worker is injured or becomes ill due to something job related, he or she may be eligible for compensation for hospital bills, doctor visits, and other expenses.

There are also several VI labor laws which cover child labor. These laws determine the minimum age a minor may work, which jobs they can fill, what hours they can work each day and the maximum number of hours they can work each day and each week.

The last of the VI labor laws I will discuss deals with work place safety. Law requires that employers provide their workers with a safe working environment free from hazards that could be life threatening or could cause serious bodily harm. These labor laws follow the requirements set forth for employers by OSHA.
