VT Labor Laws
September 21st, 2006 Posted by JaredThere are many Vermont (VT) labor laws and I found a great deal about them online today. These laws have been created to benefit both employers and employees in the state of Vermont. Although numerous, the VT labor laws are pretty straight forward and easy to understand.
Several of the VT labor laws are required to be posted in all Vermont work places. These have been put on what are called the Vermont labor law posters. Employers normally hang these around the business where employees have easy access to them. Some of the places where these posters are often found are the walls around a time clock, common working areas for employees, and the lunch room.
The first and easiest of the VT labor laws to find was the minimum wage. As of January of 2006, the minimum wage in Vermont is $7.25 per hour. This is a significant jump from the minimum wage of $6.75 just two years ago. Tipped employees can be paid less each hour, so long as the tips they make plus the wage they earn equals the minimum wage in the state. Employers may pay tipped employees as little as $3.65 per hour.
There is also a VT labor law which addresses sexual harassment. It is considered to be illegal and includes forms of unwelcome sexual advances, unwanted touch, lewd and inappropriate comments and suggestions, and the request of “sexual favors”. Civil penalties for breaking this law can reach $10,000 for each infraction! Anyone who files a sexual harassment charge is not to be retaliated against based on this law.
A labor law I hadn’t seen before is in effect in Vermont, as well. Called the “Employers’ reinstatement liability”, employers may be required to rehire an employee who had suffered a job related injury. This is in effect so long as the employee recovers within two years time.
These are just a sampling of a few of the VT labor laws. You can find more detailed information about these and other labor laws on the Vermont labor law posters. When you have a need for federal and state labor law information, you can find that on the Vermont Complete Labor Law Poster.
