Why do we have to have a Labor Poster at work? Can’t people read the laws on their own? That answer would have to be a no. Employers cannot depend on employees to go and look up the laws and inform themselves. That’s why there is a Labor Poster at work to make sure employees know.

The federal government mandated that all employers must display labor posters that have information regarding all types of employment law and regulations. A Labor Poster can provide that crucial information needed to make sure the laws are understood by employees.

A Labor Poster contains information about state laws for each individual state. The federal laws that are included on the posters are the USERRA - Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, Equal Employment Opportunity is the Law, Federal Minimum Wage, Employee Polygraph Protection Act, Family and Medical Leave Act and OSHA-Job Safety & Health Protection. These are required to appear on the posters. Additional types of Law Posters include information on sexual harassment, HIPAA, OSHA, state only, federal only and more.

Employers must post the labor poster in plain view. These posters can be found in common areas or in the employee workroom. A Law Poster has specific laws that relate to employment and where an employee can receive assistance if he or she feels that one of the laws has been violated.

Make sure the Labor Poster is placed in a conspicuous place at work. Remember the employer has the responsibility to post the latest version on file in the work place. Sometimes a Labor Poster is updated frequently, so it’s really important to check for the latest updates. It is mandated by law.

At least once per year the posters should be updated since laws change. It’s best to check with your Labor Poster supplier to see if laws have changed this year. If there is a change then more than likely you will need a new poster.
