Gay Discrimination
September 23rd, 2006 Posted by NicoleGay discrimination is discrimination against gay people, otherwise called homosexuals. It is strictly prohibited in the workplace and is generally tied to feelings of homophobia. Gay discrimination is also considered to be hateful towards gay people and their lifestyles. As such, it is not to be used as a form of employee screening when connected with the workplace.
Gay discrimination, while often pervasive in places of work, has been legislated by the U.S. government to protect the rights of homosexual workers. These rights are considered to be civil rights and have been at the center of many heated political debates both in and outside of government institutions.
Because of the frequency of discrimination against gays, there have been many marches and public demonstrations revolving around gay rights. Gay rights, according to many, are not fully actualized because of the government’s reluctance to accept gays into the culture completely by allowing for marriage. Therefore, many people pushing for more gay rights believe that there will be further gay discrimination in the workplace until gays are allowed to fully gather and live as they wish.
Gay discrimination in the workplace is strictly prohibited. There are labor laws protecting gay rights and other rights so that workers can feel that they don’t have to hide their identities or compromise their jobs in order to placate an employer.
Employers are required to post labor law posters in the workplace. These posters contain information about workers rights as they pertain to gay discrimination in the workplace and other civil rights. At any time, if any employee believes that he or she is the victim of gay discrimination, then the employee can contact the state agency or the federal agency that regulates that particular labor law. An employer can face a harsh penalty if found guilty of gay discrimination.
