Wyoming Dept. of Employment
January 25th, 2007 Posted by AmeliaThe Wyoming Dept. of Employment recently unveiled a new program to help students. The Wyoming Career Explorer is a publication available free from the Wyoming Dept. of Employment.
The Explorer, is offered free of charge to students, guidance counselors and schools. It helps high school students seeking their first part-time job or exploring career options. The Explorer is filled with tips on how to find that first job. It discusses creating the perfect resume and making a great impression during the interview. The Explorer also contains important information on worker’s rights, focusing on the rights of teens. It also offers a number of tips on staying safe in the workplace.
“The Wyoming Career Explorer can help students take their first step toward actually working in their chosen career fields,” said Krista Shinkle, senior economist and publications editor at the Employment Department’s Research & Planning division. “We want students to realize that the path to becoming a veterinarian, for example, can begin in high school by working part-time at an animal shelter.”
Altogether, the Explorer gives students the tools they need to get a start on their careers. It lists descriptions and hourly wages for nearly 200 Wyoming occupations using the most current data from the Occupational Employment Statistics survey. In-depth profiles are offered on a number of occupations, especially those in the popular mining and tourism industries.
The student publication is available online as well. “The Explorer is one of our most frequently downloaded products,” said Research & Planning Manager Tom Gallagher. “Nearly 500 visitors accessed the Explorer Web page during the last quarter.”
Over the next few weeks, Wyoming Career Explorer publications will be mailed directly to high school counseling or career counseling offices throughout Wyoming. Each school will receive enough Explorers for every 10th-grade student, based on last year’s ninth-grade enrollment figures. Additional copies are available at no charge from the Dept. of Employment.
