Connecticut Dept. of Labor

The Connecticut Dept. of Labor recently announced a seminar on unemployment to be held on Friday, May 4. The event, called “Unemployment Insurance 101” will be conducted from 8 am to 11 am at the Dept. of Labor office in Wethersfield, through the Dept.’s Office of Program Policy.

The program will be conducted by Attorney George Wentworth, the Labor Department’s Chief Counsel and Director of Program Policy. Human resource professionals, business owners, managers and other employers who are interested in learning about their rights and responsibilities regarding the unemployment insurance program are urged to attend.

Here’s a sneak peak of the seminar’s offerings.

Topics to be covered include the key points that the Unemployment Compensation board considers in determining benefit eligibility. If you’ve ever wondered who receives unemployment and who does not, and why, this is your chance to have all of your questions answered. Wentworth will also discuss the law of “quits and fires,” the system the board uses to determine if an employee legally quit or was terminated. As you may already know, in many instances, an employee who quits is not eligible for unemployment benefits.

If you’re an employer, have you ever had an employee contest an unemployment benefit ruling? If so, you’ll want to attend the conference to learn about effective employer participation in contested cases. This will provide a guide to navigating the 3-level hearing and appeals process for unemployment compensation. The process can be intimidating to uninitiated employers, but when you are knowledgeable, it becomes quite manageable.

Wentworth will also present a basic introduction to unemployment insurance taxes. While this is a complex topic, he will give a comprehensive overview and answer all your questions.

There are 10 things that every employer should know about unemployment compensation in Connecticut. Wentworth will cover these crucial items in his presentation. Finally, he’ll also address common questions about unemployment eligibility issues.

Ample time is set aside for a question and answer period, so be sure to bring your toughest unemployment insurance questions. A continental breakfast will be served.
