Nevada Minimum Wage Reminder

May 7th, 2007 Posted by Mark

Getting back to some of the important changes to minimum wages out there, we cannot forget about what will soon be taking place in Nevada. As of this coming July 1, the Nevada minimum wage will be increasing, according to the state’s Office of the Labor Commissioner. The Nevada Office of the Labor Commissioner wants to remind all employers in the state that the Nevada Constitution requires that the Nevada minimum wage be increased every year based on the previous year’s inflation rate.

It’s the Section 16 (A) of Article 5 of the state constitution, to be exact, that calls for these so called “cost of living adjustments” to the Nevada minimum wage. And according to this section of the state constitution, these changes go into effect every year on July 1. Whether or not these changes do or do not require a new Nevada minimum wage poster on your part, that is a good question and one I shall look into for you as soon as possible. But in the meantime, employers have some time to gear up for the wage increase for their lowest paid workers.

The new Nevada minimum wage as of July 1? It will become $5.30 per hour for those of you out there in Nevada who provide your employees with health insurance benefits. If you do not provide health insurance benefits to your employees, then your Nevada minimum wage increases to $6.33 per hour. Nevada is an interesting state in this regard that it has a two tiered minimum wage system, divided between employers that offer health care benefits and those who do not. It just goes to show you how important health care is relative to other costs that employers face, so much so that the state of Nevada is willing to factor it into their minimum wage laws.
