Three Minnesota community colleges will receive more than $5 million to train workers in the fastest-growing industries, thanks to recent US Department of Labor grants. The schools beat out more than 200 other applicants to win the highly competitive grants from the ETA, the federal Employee Training Administration.

Minneapolis Community and Technical College is the winner of a $2 million federal grant to train workers in the construction industry. The school offers more than 60 liberal arts and career programs from Accounting to Western Clinical Herbalism.

Riverland Community College in scenic Austin, Minnesota was awarded a $1,010,429 grant to train workers in the healthcare industry. The school, located in southern Minnesota, offers new courses this year including Safety & OSHA.

Saint Paul College – A Community & Technical College was awarded a grant of $1,998,854 to train workers for the healthcare field. The school offers a number of health-related courses of study, including those in Child Development, Practical Nursing, Respiratory Therapists and Lab Technician.

Due to globalization, technology, innovation and an aging workforce, many industries are in dire need of skilled employees. Industries across the country, including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, energy and construction are seeking skilled employees. Regional industries, too, are in need of qualified workers. For example, Crescent City, California’s hospitality industry needs skilled workers and in southern California workers with movie trade experience are in demand.

The grants also aim to fortify the part that community colleges play in advancing the potential of America’s workforce. The programs assist workers of all ages to train for jobs in high-growth industries, specifically for high-paying jobs with career advancement.

Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training, Brent R. Orrell said, “Preparing local residents for careers in growing hometown industries is critical to improving the quality of life of thousands of Americans. These programs will provide participants not only with the skills needed to gain employment, but the change to enter into careers that offer opportunities for advancement.”
