2009 Labor Law Posters
October 22nd, 2008 Posted by DerrickEvery employer should take a few minutes to update his or her labor law posters.
The 2009 labor law posters involve a number of changes that affect virtually every employer. The EEOC or Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued a new 2009 labor law poster that updates laws on what is considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA.
The USERRA (Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act) regulations have also been updated, requiring a new 2009 labor law poster.
A number of states will increase the minimum wage on January 1, 2009. These include cost-of-living increases in Florida, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Colorado, Arizona, Montana, Missouri and Ohio.
The most convenient way for employers to stay abreast of changes in posting requirements, is to enroll in an affordable poster update system. Such programs automatically ship new posters to employers whenever a revision is issued.
Several states have new employment laws that go into effect on January 1, 2009. The Oregon Smokefree Workplace Law is just one example. The law will prohibit smoking in the workplace, including plants, restaurants and bars where it is currently permitted. The ban also prohibits smoking outside within 10 feet of entrances and exits, windows or air vents. Under that law, almost every employer must post non-smoking signs in the workplace, and an updated 2009 Oregon non-smoking poster.
The California overtime law will be amended to make computer professionals earning less than $36 per hour eligible for overtime.
The federal minimum wage increased from $5.85 to $6.55 per hour on July 24, 2008. That rate will increase again to $7.25 on July 24, 2009. Each of these changes requires that employers update their 2009 labor law posters.
About 15 states will increase the state minimum wage with the federal minimum wage raise. These include Indiana, Idaho, Maryland, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico a, Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
All of these changes will require new 2009 labor law posters. Employers who fair to prominently display required posters face fines from federal and state agencies.
