North Dakota Unemployment Insurance Update

February 24th, 2007 Posted by Mark

There is a new unemployment contribution rate in North Dakota that all employers should know about. As of 2007, the unemployment contribution rate for so called positive experience employers in the state of North Dakota is in the range of .34 percent to 1.07 percent.

On the other hand, for negative experience employers in the state of North Dakota, the contribution rate is from 5.18 percent to 8.09 percent. There is also a new rate in the state for positive balance non construction employees, which is 1.60 percent. Negative balance non construction employers have to pay a contribution rate in 2007 of 5.18 percent. When it comes to new construction employers, they have to pay a unemployment insurance contribution rate of 8.09 percent.

Remember how the unemployment insurance system works in North Dakota and other states? It has been some time since we were back on this topic, we’ve been talking about the minimum wage now for so long I can’t remember when. But the unemployment system in this country works by the state paying workers who got laid off from their job or lost it due to no error or action of their own, with these payments usually coming monthly and based on what they used to make.

The system is paid for by the employers in the state. These employers pay a percentage of their overall payroll to the state unemployment insurance fund. This percentage is not a flat rate. For new employers, it is based on the average payment rate for companies in their industry. For companies that have been around for more than a year or so, the unemployment contribution rate is based on their experience rating, which is a measure of how many people they have tended to lay off in the recent past. The more people you lay off, the worse your experience rating.
