Human Resource New Hire Reporting in Nebraska

December 14th, 2006 Posted by Mark

The law that sets up this new employee database in the state of Nebraska is called Nebraska Statute 48-2301. OK, I hear you, loyal readers. You’re saying to yourselves: “What next, is he going to start reciting the actual law for crimminey’s sake?”

No, I will not start reciting the actual law, thank you. But what I will do is at least tell you what differences the Nebraska new hire reporting law has compared to other state new hire laws that we’ve looked at so far. And if you’re lucky, loyal reader, I may even tell you how to properly handle this Nebraska labor law.

In Nebraska, unlike in certain other states, you have 20 days according to the labor law to report new employees to the state. No one is exempt from this law. All employers who file tax forms for their employees are included, and even labor unions and hiring halls that have their own employees must report them as well.

On the other hand, if a labor organization or hiring hall only recommends folks to be employees for other companies, then they do not need to report on these individuals, because if they get hired by other companies, they are technically the new employees of those companies. It would be those companies that would be responsible for reporting them to Nebraska.

But on the other hand, if during this referral process, the labor organization or hiring hall pays the some money to the folks that it is referring to these other companies (instead of paying the other companies), then the labor organization or hiring hall would have to report these folks as employees.

Got that? Put another way, anytime you are paying somebody what could be considered wages for the first time, chances are in Nebraska you have to report them to the state as new hires.

Nebraska (NE) Department of Human Resources

August 18th, 2006 Posted by Kimberly

Those that live in the state of Nebraska often find themselves learning and knowing what is happening within the country as a whole, but may not know what is happening in the state in which they live. If you live here, then the Nebraska (NE) Department of Human Resources is one of the most complex yet most fundamentally important departments within our government. Those that find themselves unemployed turn to this department for aid in providing necessary services including insurance and financial help. Those business owners that work here turn to this department for help in insuring that they meet law requirements for hiring and employing individuals.

The Nebraska Department of Human Resources provides a great deal of help to us, but it also provides a great deal of information for us as well. For example, one of the key tasks that the department must take note of is that of monitoring the unemployment within the state. The lower the unemployment levels are, the better our economy is. But, most do not realize what our state level is set at. In September of 2005, the rate of unemployment in the state of Nebraska was set at 4 percent. This is still a considerably low number but over the cost of the last year, it has dropped significantly. In July of 2006, the unemployment rate was at 3.1 percent, much lower than the national level of 4.8 percent.

The Nebraska Department for Human Resources provides a great deal of programs for those that are unemployed as well. What you may not know is that Job Training and Dislocated Worker Funds have received over 255 million dollars towards these programs from the federal government to provide necessary training and career development to those of us living here that need it to find employment. As you can see, this department provides a great deal of help as well as guidance to all of us living in the state, even if we do not know it yet.
