The Arizona minimum wage will increase by 35 cents, from $6.90 to $7.25 per hour on January 1, 2009. This is the first annual cost-of-living increase under the new Arizona minimum wage law. The increase is based on the annual inflation rate as reported by the CPI, the Consumer Price Index.  

On November 7, 2006, the Arizona voters approved Proposition 202, also known as the “Raise the Arizona Minimum Wage for Working Arizonans Act.” Under A.R.S. 23-364(A), which became effective January 1, 2007, the Industrial Commission of Arizona was given the authority to enforce and implement the Act.  Effective January 1, 2008, Arizona’s minimum wage increased to $6.90 per hour.  

Every employer covered under the Act is required to pay each employee wages not less than this amount, according to the Industrial Commission of Arizona.Effective January 12, 2008, final Administrative Rules under Title 20, Chapter 5, Article 12 were approved and are currently in effect.  

The Arizona minimum wage applies to part-time and temporary workers, as well as full-time permanent workers.

On January 1, 2009 the Ohio minimum wage increases by 30 cents from $7.00 to $7.30 per hour.  

On that same date, the Ohio minimum wage for tipped employees increases by 15 cents, from $3.50 to $3.65 per hour, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce. Any tipped Ohio employee who does not average $3.65 per hour in tips must be paid the difference in wages by the employer.

Under Ohio law, smaller companies can pay employers less. Companies with revenue less than $267,000 in 2009 can pay just $6.55 under the Ohio minimum wage law. However, when the federal minimum wage increases on July 24, 2009, they must pay at least $7.25 per hour. Youths who are 14 and 15 years of age can also be paid these reduced wages.

The Colorado minimum wage will increase by 26 cents, from $7.02 to $7.28 per hour, effective January 1, 2009. The minimum wage for tipped employees in the state will also increase by 26 cents, from $4.00 to $4.26 per hour.

Under Article XVIII, Section 15 of the Colorado Constitution, as amended in 2006, the Colorado minimum wage is adjusted annual for inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Colorado. That law also increased the Colorado minimum wage to $6.85 per hour in 2007, and capped the tax credit employers can take for tipped workers at $3.02 per hour.

The Washington state minimum wage will increase to $8.55 per hour on January 1, 2009. The state Department of Labor and Industries or L& I recalculates the minimum wage each year in September as required by state Initiative 688, approved by Washington voters in 1998.

The Washington state minimum wage is adjusted each year based on the federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers or CPI-W during the 12 months ending on August 31. The Consumer Price Index is a national measure of the cost of goods and services required for daily life. During the 12-month period ending in August 2008, the CPI increased a whopping 5.9%. For comparison, the increase in the prior year was 1.8%, which led to an increase of 14 cents per hour in the Washington minimum wage.
