Houston Employer Sued for $5 Million Overtime Wages
October 6th, 2008 Posted by CaraThe U.S. Department of Labor has filed a lawsuit on September 25, 2008 against Houston-based CEMEX Inc. for overtime violations. The suit maintains that the company failed to pay $5 million in overtime to more than 2,000 drivers from eight states. The employees were drivers of ready-mix concrete trucks.
CEMEX, founded in Mexico in 1906, provides cement and other building supplies for the construction industry. The company’s website claims it employers more than 60,000 employees in 50 countries on 5 continents.
North Carolina Tipped Minimum Wage Decrease
August 18th, 2008 Posted by DerrickThe minimum wage for tipped employees in North Carolina has been reduced to $2.13 per hour, for now, despite the increase in the state and federal minimum wage on July 24, 2008.
On July 24, both the federal and North Carolina minimum wages increased to $6.55 per hour. However, employees who earn at least $30 per month in tips can be paid less.

North Carolina Minimum Wage Increase
August 8th, 2008 Posted by MadisonOn July 24, 2008, when the federal minimum wage rose from $5.85 per hour to $6.55 per hour, North Carolina ‘s minimum wage increased by 40 cents from $6.15 per hour to match the federal minimum of $6.55. That’s because under state law, when the federal minimum wage is higher, the North Carolina rate increases to match it.

Nine Additional States Affected by Federal Minimum Wage Increase
July 25th, 2008 Posted by AmeliaThe July 24, 2008 federal minimum wage increase affects employers in a number of states. Under the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007, the federal minimum wage increased by 70 cents from $5.85 to $6.55 per hour.
This increase affects most employers in states where the state minimum wage is lower than the new federal rate. Under federal law, when an employee is covered by both state and federal law, the employee is entitled to coverage under whichever law provides the greater benefit.

Federal Minimum Wage Increase July 24, 2008
